Lucha Underground 9.21.16 (Season Three, Episode 3)

OFFICIAL RESULTS
Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion The Monster Matanza Cueto defeated The Mack @ 6:04 via pin [***]
Ultimate Opportunity Match: Cage defeated Texano @ 6:00 via pin [**]
Trios Title Match: Champions Dragon, Fenix and Aerostar defeated Taya, Jack Evans and PJ Black @ 9:25 via pin [**½]

– We get the usual slick opening video package.

– Rey Mysterio and Dragon Azteca Jr have a sparring session. Dragon Azteca Jr wants revenge for Pentagon Dark breaking his arm, but Rey reminds him that they have a more important and dangerous war to fight. Chavo Guerrero arrives, Dragon Azteca Jr talks some shit and charges him but Chavo works a deadly single leg crab Rey makes him release Dragon Azteca Jr, there some tension there, and it’s because no one likes Chavo.

– TIME FOR DARIO’S DIAL OF DOOM! He mocked Havoc for failing the last time, and then we got a spin of the wheel. The Mack is the next victim.

Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion The Monster Matanza Cueto vs. The Mack: Matanza was waiting at the bottom of the steps, but the Mack and his sweet jacket attacked and hit Matanza with the stunner on the floor. He rolls Matanza in and went for repeated pins. Mack then ran wild with strikes and a RANA before kicking Matanza’s face off with a bicycle kick. This was a great fire segment to begin, with the crowd completely into Mack. Matanza finally cut him off with a German suplex and then choked out Mack. Matanza continued to attack as Dario gave him instructions. Mack tried to fire up as they traded strikes center cage, and then Mack sent Matanza to the floor and connected with the dive. Mack rolled him back into the ring, Mack headed up top and the frog splash ate knees. The wrath of the gods finished the Mack. That was a lot of fun, and had a great atmosphere. Dario is so confident right now of his monster brother, but one has to wonder if the dial of doom gimmick will end up overextending Matanza, leading to his first loss.

– Somewhere on the open road, we see Son of Havoc watching a Famous B commercial. He’s chilling with Mascarita Sagrada, and they are in Son if Havoc’s basement. HIS MOM IS THERE WITH BAGEL BITES.

– Mundo wants his Lucha Underground title shot, but Dario says that he and his crew get their trios title rematch tonight. Mundo refuses and leaves to go to his dojo, and Taya offers to replace him.

– Dario is here and says that this next match is for the Ultimate Opportunity.

Cage vs. Texano: Cage tries to ground Texano early, and uses some mat wrestling. Texano stops that and stuns Cage off the ropes and hits a slingshot senton. An enziguri follows, and covers for 2. Cage connects with kicks, sends Texano to the floor and connects with a dive. Back in, Cage connects with the neck breaker and that gets 2. Texano escapes the suplex and then works a reverse Boston crab. Texano made the reps, and ate a German suplex. Texano countered a second and worked an ankle lock, but Cage got the ropes. Texano hits a spin kick and then the tilt a whirl back breaker for the near fall. Texano misses a charge and eats a lariat and leg lariat. The spinebuster followed and Cage covers for 2. Texano avoided a lariat and hit a pump handle slam for 2. Cage cut him off with a German and another neck breaker for 2. Cage then hit the spinning clothesline for the win. This was just there; they did stuff, it was clunky, had little to no energy and then it ended anticlimactically.

– Dario then said Cage would get his opportunity… if he beats Texano two more times because this is now a best of five series. Not exactly excited to see more matches between these two, hopefully they get better.

– Dario is in his office and opens up a box that had a hat in it. He tosses it aside and opens an envelope with pictures in it. He tosses them aside as Dragon Azteca Jr arrives and demands a match with Pentagon Dark. Dario agrees to it and adds it to the schedule. Someone arrives and the pictures magically appear back on Dario’s desk. Dario gives them to the guy as Chavo then shows up. Chavo says they need to talk and we head to the ring. That was as odd segment that felt way too thrown together.

Trios Title Match: Champions Dragon, Fenix and Aerostar vs. Taya, Jack Evans and PJ Black: Evans blindfolded himself and did back flips and karate stuff, Black and Taya were not amused so Taya tagged her self in to start the match. Drago and Taya worked some basic and solid back and forth. Black and Aerostar tagged in, they picked up the pacing here and Black connected with some kicks. Aerostar back with a kick and then a twisting high cross connected. Black countered a tornado DDT into a dead lift suplex and that got 2. Black then came off the second rope, ate boots and Aerostar tagged in Fenix. Evans tagged in, they are teasing tension with team Taya; Evans then tagged out to Taya Fenix slapped the hell out of Taya and the landed a kick. She tags out to Black, which didn’t work out as he ate a double stomp Evans finally in now, he and Drago did some fun and fast paced back and forth. Evans then trapped Drago in the corner and attacked his ass. Seriously. Black tagged himself in as Evans and Taya argued; Black hit a moonsault for a near fall. He then missed a second try. Evans refused the tag so Black slapped him for the tag and Taya tossed him in, but he tagged right back out. Evans actually sat and pouted on the floor as the champions worked over Black with a rapid-fire series of moves. Taya hit a dive onto the floor on Drago and Fenix, Black and Aerostar were left in the ring and Aerostar kicked him out of midair, stunned him off the ropes and then hit a sling shot into the codebreaker for the win. That was completely under whelming and had none of the energy of their previous matches, due to the focus on pouty Jack Evans. It looks as if they are setting for the split of the Worldwide Underground, which is fine, but it hurt the match and wasn’t exactly a great story. Jack was pissy and then pouted about it, yay.

– Post match Mundo returned and attacked the champions. Taya and Black joined him. Sexy Star made the save, and helped to clear the ring. I still think we see an eight-person tag soon; it makes sense with what they’ve done so far.

– In his office, Dario informs Rey Mysterio that Dragon Azteca Jr wanted a match with Pentagon Jr. Rey says he is not ready, and Dario says that Dragon Azteca Jr will face Chavo Guerrero and the winner will get a match against Pentagon Dark. Dario says to make it fair; Rey will be the special referee. Instead of penciling it in, Dario writes it in ink.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Not So Good
The 411
This was an overall bland episode of the show, and was largely downhill after the opening segment. It lacked the overall energy and fun of the previous two shows, and on top of the wrestling feeling off, there wasn’t any really good storyline hooks to keep you involved, no real sizzle to the steak. Traditionally, when Lucha Underground has an off week, they rebound big the next week. Lets hope that is the case here, because this show wasn’t very good or exciting this week.
